Tag der Hydrologie header

Der Tag der Hydrologie im März 2023 in Bochum zog 270 Teilnehmer*innen ins Veranstaltungszentrum der RUB.

On 22 and 23 March, the Hydrology Day took place at the Ruhr University Bochum. The conference's main theme was "Sustainable Water Management - Regional and Global Strategies". Sessions on "Urban Hydrology", "Water Quality in Global Change", "Artificial Intelligence in Hydrology", "Monitoring and Analysis of Hydrological Extremes" and "Future Challenges for Water Governance" brought together 270 experts from all over Germany at the RUB Event Centre.

The Hydrology Day is organised annually around World Water Day on 22 March by different universities in Germany and this year was hosted by the Chair of Engineering Hydrology and Water Resources Management at RUB (Prof.'in Dr.-Ing. Martina Flörke) and the Chair of Hydraulic Engineering and Hydromechanics at Bochum University of Applied Sciences (Prof. Dr.-Ing. Christoph Mudersbach).

The Hydrology Day was organised in coordination with and with the support of the Deutschen Vereinigung für Wasserwirtschaft, Abwasser und Abfall e.V., the Fachgemeinschaft Hydrologische Wissenschaften in der DWA (FgHW), the Deutsche Hydrologische Gesellschaft e.V. (DHG), the North Rhine-Westphalia State Agency for Nature, Environment and Consumer Protection (LANUV) as well as the Emschergenossenschaft and the Lippeverband (EGLV).

After opening greetings and a keynote speech by Dr. Jeanette Völker from the Federal Environment Agency on "How do we make our waters fit for the future? "the presentations in the five sessions showed the current state of science on various topics of hydrology such as heavy rain, floods or drought, new tools for recording water quality with the most diverse pressures, how we can prepare for future challenges of water management, especially in urban areas, but also how methods of artificial intelligence and machine learning are increasingly finding their way into hydrological issues.

The participants also took the opportunity to get to know the products and services of a number of exhibitors, whose stands were available for consultation and discussion.

The programme was rounded off by an excursion to the conversion of the Emscher river.

The long versions of the contributions will be published in the FgHW publication series "Forum für Hydrologie und Wasserbewirtschaftung" in summer 2023.

The Hydrology Day 2024 will take place in Berlin on 20-21 March 2024.
