On 25 July 2023, the Chair of Soil Mechanics, Foundation Engineering and Environmental Geotechnics organised a field trip to the Hambach open-cast mine. In addition to students from the master’s programmes Subsurface Engineering and Civil Engineering, some PhD students of the Chair took part.

The excursion led right into the opencast mine and showed the participants the different mining steps, but also how the excavation pit is refilled and renatured after mining.
