Concrete Canoe Regatta 2024

03.07.2024

Betonkanu-Regatta 2024

In a project seminar held by the Chair of Construction Materials, students from the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering designed and built their own concrete canoes, which they used to take part in this year's concrete canoe regatta in Brandenburg.

The concrete canoe regatta combines the disciplines of concrete construction and boatbuilding technology. On June 14 and 15, 2024, numerous teams from all over Europe competed against each other in a sporting competition as well as in a technical evaluation of their concrete canoes. The canoes, which were designed and constructed by students, were tested for their buoyancy, robustness, construction and the material concept for optimizing weight and flow resistance. The presentation of the concrete canoe on site was also taken into account for the final assessment. Prizes were also awarded for the best design and the most sustainable canoe.

The students of the Concrete Canoe RUB (CCR) team were divided into three working groups for the production of the two competition-ready concrete canoes:

  • Design & Modeling
  • Formwork concept & construction
  • Material concept & concrete design

After a thorough conception phase, the concreting took place in the factory hall of the construction part testing (KIB-KON) as well as the boat launching in the pond in front of the I-buildings on the RUB campus. Finally, the RUB canoes "(R)U-BOOT 1" and "(R)U-BOOT 2" could be loaded for transportation to Bandenburg an der Havel with a good feeling after test runs had also been completed on Lake Kemnader. As part of the regatta, the Concrete Canoe RUB team was represented by a women's team, a men's team and a mixed team with 2 students each.
