On January 19, 2023, the UTRM/UI student council will hold its annual UI plenary meeting at 4:00 pm. The main topic on the agenda of the plenary meeting will be the election of the new student council. Interested students who would like to participate in the student council and get a deeper insight into the structures of the university are thereby cordially invited. The event will take place in the student council room IC 03/173. Coffee and cookies will be provided! Come by, vote or get elected!
Under the direction of Prof. Dr. Peter Mark from the Chair of Concrete Structures, the second funding phase of Priority Program 2187 "Adaptive Modulbauweisen mit Fließfertigungsmethoden – Präzisionsschnellbau der Zukunft" was approved by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the project was thus extended by three years.

Last Friday, 25 November 2022, the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering invited to the annual Academic Year Celebration, which this year again took place in the presence of the Audimax. Univ.-Prof. Dr. Markus Knobloch, Dean of the Faculty, and Lisa Freiin von Rössing, Master's student in Computational Engineering, led the ceremony. After the ceremony, the guests met at a reception with DJ entertainment in the coffee bar of the RUB and thus ended the evening in a convivial atmosphere.
On November 18, 2022, the kick-off event for the Voluntary Scientific Year 2022/23 took place. The one-year educational offer – comparable to the Federal Volunteer Service – enables the selected high school graduates to gain insight into the research projects of the engineering faculties and to participate in university courses.
On November 16, 2022, the golden doctoral anniversary of Dr.-Ing. Horst Schultz was honored during the annual academic year celebration of the Ruhr University Bochum. Dr. Schultz received his doctorate in 1972 on the topic of "Beitrag zur Berechnung von Temperaturverteilung und Temperaturspannungen bei Reaktordruckbehältern".
Soon the exam registration phase will start via FlexNow! For this purpose, interested students and first-year students are invited to the official FlexNow introduction on November 16, 2022 at 3:00 pm via Zoom. On October 26, 2022, a group of students from the faculty, led by the Tunneling and Construction Management, was invited to visit the Viehbachtalstr. construction site in Solingen for the third construction phase.
Due to the energy saving measures of the Ruhr-University Bochum, the IC library will be closed from Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2022 to Sunday, Jan. 8, 2023. In order to keep the holdings accessible, a "Book-to-Go" service will be offered.
This year's Academic Year Celebration will take place on 25th November 2022. The invitations have already been sent out - registration via the link provided therein is mandatory!
On November 15, 2022, Prof.'in Dr.-Ing. Annette Hafner and her research assistant M.Sc. Caya Zernicke will present an information tool for communes at this year's online seminar series "Auf Zukunftskurs: Öffentliches Bauen mit Holz" of the Fachagentur Nachwachsende Rohstoffe e.V., which serves as a simple tool for estimating the benefits of energetic measures in timber construction.

On November 21, 2022 at 3 p.m., our study programs Civil Engineering and Environmental Engineering will be presented at the online event Digital University Days of the Ruhr-Universität Bochum. Interested parties and students from grade 10 are hereby cordially invited to participate in the free event.
Can you name an important female bridge or tunnel builder? No? Unfortunately, neither can most of the experts - and that is about to change. After the application and preparation phase, the content of the mentoring program "Breaking the Glass Ceiling - Early Installation of Professional Networks for Women Engineers" has now begun: The mentees have met their mentors. With the program, the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering aims to provide its female master's students, above all, with support from experienced female leaders in "typical" male domains. Now the first metaphorical bridges have been built - time for a first conclusion.

The tandem language learning program offers STEM students of RUB an individual and subject-specific form of language training. In the exchange with a MINT tandem partner who speaks the target language as a native speaker or at a high-level, language skills can be expanded in a subject-related context and technical vocabulary can be acquired.

With the new Summer School "Blue Engineering", students of the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering will have the opportunity from 20.09.2022 to 22.09.2022 to deal with environmental policy and ethics issues in an interdisciplinary way. The three-day event primarily offers space for discussions and own ideas, which can include topics such as car-free cities, virtual water, technology design and evaluation. The Summer School is organised and run by the Chair of Environmental Engineering + Ecology, supported by Blue Engineering AG. Interested parties can register now.
From 22 August to 11 September 2022, the Chair of Computing in Engineering headed by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Markus König, together with the BIMKIT project and the WORLDFACTORY Start-up Center, will provide information on the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in civil engineering and present various demonstrators live. Interested citizens can expect a poster exhibition and meet-the-scientist afternoons in addition to demonstrations in the Blue Square experience room at Ruhr-Universität Bochum.
With the new Sustainability Officer Prof. Dr. Andreas Löschel and the Sustainability Task Force, RUB is now pushing ahead with its sustainability goals. The Task Force Team also includes Prof. Dr. Günther Meschke, head of the Chair of Statics and Dynamics, and Prof.'in Dr.-Ing. Annette Hafner, head of the Chair of Resource Efficient Construction. Interested RUB members can contribute to the Sustainability Think Tank, which will be in regular exchange with the Task Force, on 07 December 2022 and 16 January 2023.
Prof.'in Dr.-Ing. Annette Hafner explained in her lecture "Building for climate change and resource conservation - current approaches", which she presented during the kick-off event of Humboldtⁿ, the Sustainability Initiative of the universities in NRW, how we can build in a climate-neutral and sustainable way and recycle everything we use. Now those interested can listen to the lecture online as part of a feature on Deutschlandfunk Nova.

The initiative "Voluntary Scientific Year" is a one-year educational program offered by the engineering faculties - comparable to the Federal Volunteer Service - in which selected high school graduates and prospective students can acquire exclusive impressions of university studies and research projects.
Not exactly eye-catchers at the moment are the abandoned concrete buckets that sporadically flank the footpaths of the I row and were originally intended as trash cans. But something is happening to the buckets, as they are being redesigned into new favorite places as part of the reCYCL:ING project, an initiative of the PR team and the Faculty Dean's Office in collaboration with the RUB Sustainability Office and the Botanical Garden. Faculty members are invited to make the campus greener and a bit more sustainable by adopting a bucket.
The Project Office of the Faculty (PBU) offers students a comprehensive range of support services. All last year's activities of the PBU have been published in an annual report and can now be read.

"BreakING the Glass Ceiling - early installation of professional networks for female engineers" is the launch of a very special mentoring program for female students at the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering, just in time for Diversity Day. It focuses primarily on contact with experienced female leaders in "typical" male domains. Those interested can apply now.
Three (former) CompEng students - Tarik Sahin, Hakan Bayer, and Salih Enes Tiryaki - have started a project, developing an intelligent garbage can, which is expected to become a start-up in the future. The idea is to make waste recycling more efficient for consumers, supported by an AI algorithm, and thus to sort waste as purely as possible into recyclable raw materials.
This year's Environmental Engineering Orientation Day will be held on Monday, May 23 at 4 p.m. in HID. The information event is particularly interesting for bachelor students in their second semester who will soon be choosing a specialization, as well as for students who will soon be graduating with a bachelor's degree and would like to learn more about the UI master's program. The event will be followed by a barbecue in front of the HZO.
As part of the Open Days, the Ruhr-Universität Bochum now invites prospective students to explore the campus virtually. Visitors have the opportunity to get to know the Faculties and the campus as part of a digital 360-degree tour, to attend information presentations by the Central Student Advisory Service and the "Junge Uni" or to obtain specific information about individual degree programmes. During the 360-degree campus tour, the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering will also provide insights into its Bachelor's degree programmes in Civil Engineering and Environmental Engineering.
On Thursday, May 5, 2022, representatives of the Federal Office for Building and Regional Planning (BBR) and the associated Federal Institute for Research on Building, Urban Affairs and Spatial Development (BBSR) visited the faculty to gain insights into the current state of research in the field of digitization in the building industry under the chair of Prof. Markus König and to explore possible cooperation interfaces.
On April 28, 2022, school students between 8th and 10th grade were invited to this year's nationwide Future Day (formerly Girls' and Boys' Day). Our faculty was also involved with two workshops, each led by the Chair of Continuum Mechanics and the Chair of Structural Mechanics. The aim of the Future Day is to give school students an insight into gender-atypical professions and courses of study, and to encourage them not to be guided by classic gender roles when choosing a course of study.
On September 21 & 22, the career event goes into the next round! CrossING offers motivated engineering students from all faculties of the RUB an annual platform to support them in their career path and to connect them with potential employers as well as national and international entrepreneurs.

On March 15, 2022, after more than 10 years of successful cooperation between the Vietnamese-German University (VGU) and the Ruhr University Bochum (RUB), a double-degree agreement for the master's program in computational engineering was signed by Rector Prof. Dr. Dr. h. c. Martin Paul and VGU President Prof. Dr. Thomas Benz.
In cooperation with the chair of Computing in Engineering at Ruhr University Bochum, a self-funded project was conducted to evaluate a BIM-based building permit for the company headquarters of Louis Opländer Heizungs- und Klimatechnik GmbH. The key objective here was to carry out the entire building permit process as well as the subsequent construction process up to the completion of the building on the basis of BIM models and digital documents.
On 29/30 March 2022, the "vocatium" trade fair kicked off in Gelsenkirchen, where the three engineering faculties of the RUB presented "AllesING!" to interested visitors. The BI + UI student advisory service was pleased to have a fully booked calendar of appointments at the fair. A total of more than 2,000 students from 32 schools informed themselves in over 3,000 appointments about their options after leaving school.

The Sustainability Forum (NHF) starts the summer semester 2022 with a variety of events - including, in addition to the annual kick-off event, a climate quiz, a writing workshop on the climate crisis as well as lectures on the topics "Ecosystem Moor in (Climate) Change" and "Foodsharing is Caring". Germany is a water-rich country, but could water shortages also affect us? Is the water crisis the result of climate change, or is it a man-made problem? On SWR2 Forum, Prof.'in Dr.-Ing. Martina Flörke, holder of the Chair of Engineering Hydrology and Water Resources Management, talks about the topic: "Dry streams and sinking groundwater - is a water crisis looming?
During the STUVA conference 2021 (24.11.-26.11.2021) Sebastian Kube presented first results of his research. At the lecture competition "Junges Forum" he convinced with his contribution "Elektrische Widerstandsmessungen zur Beschreibung der Partikeeinlagerung während der Penetration von Bentonit in kohäsionsloses Lockergestein" and won the first prize: a visit to the major construction site "Scarborough Subway" in Toronto (Canada).

With "FACE your Future! Women and Start-ups", the Ruhr-University Bochum is offering the next Summer School for Bachelor's and Master's students from all disciplines. Students interested in starting a business can expect new knowledge, skills and contacts in the field of start-ups, and are invited to attend with academic experts and experts from start-up practice. Registrations are possible until 14th April 2022.

The RESET project team would like to invite female researchers to participate in the project's digital campaign dedicated to International Women's Day, which is celebrated annually on 8 March. The campaign aims to recognise the crucial role of women and girls in science and technology and to raise awareness of the contribution of women in science.
Under the coordination of the AG for Wind Engineering and Fluid Mechanics and together with the Centre for Teaching and Learning (Zentrum für Wissenschaftsdidaktik) at RUB, the Transnational Didactic Meeting took place from 10 to 12 February 2022 as part of the PARFORCE program. The aim was to expand the didactic knowledge of the participating PARFORCE project partners regarding the use of digital media.
On 28 April 2022, the nationwide Girls' Day will once again take place at the RUB. Four chairs of the Faculty offer pupils from the 8th to 10th grade an insight into their fields of work and research within the framework of exciting workshops.

Due to high demand, the UI student council has organized a study room for the upcoming study period. On Wednesdays, ten people (eight students and two student council representatives) can meet from 9 am to 6 pm in IC 04/205 to study together. The offer starts already from next Wednesday, February 02, 2022. Interested persons can register for a place here.
With immediate effect, the blue vignette replaces the previously valid green vignette on student ID cards for the necessary status check. Information on the effects on the upcoming examination period as well as on the issuing points for the blue vignette can be found here.
The Sustainability Forum invites interested parties to the next working meeting on 01.02.2022 at 6 pm. From classic lecture events on "Critique of Consumerism" and "Uncomfortable Truths of Nutrition" to new formats such as creative writing workshops, excursions to ecosystems in the region, to experiments such as sustainable "Running Dinner" or even the development of its own games to promote sustainable education - the plans of the Sustainability Forum are diverse.
